The Sanskrit name for Vedic astrology, or Hindu astrology, is Jyoti, which roughly translates to “light/heavenly body,” and the modality appears to have originated in the Rigveda, an ancient Indian book (though others claim it dates back to 10,000 B.C.).
Pamela McDonough, creator of Moondance Vedic Astrology and author of Vedic Astrology for Beginners, states, “Vedic astrology encompasses the rich spiritual traditions and mythology of ancient Indian culture.”
“Today, Jyotish is a widely accepted science in most of India, and for many, it is a way of life.” Vedic astrology was originally utilized to identify crucial dates for sacrifices and ceremonies.
The ancient Hindu way of life, based on the Karma theory, looked at the progress of the human soul based on three essential macroscopic parameters: the karma acquired from your past life, the Karma you acquire by virtue of your actions in your present life, and, based on these, your future life. They classified our present life into four broad aspects.
DHARMA – Right Living
ARTHA – The Monetary aspect
KAMA – The Desires
MOKSHA – Spiritual Progress and Liberation
They recognized the importance of balancing these four aspects of life for the proper progress.
